In 1984 Damian Elwes was invited by art dealer Robert Fraser to exhibit at the Fruitmarket Gallery, Edinburgh in an exhibition called “Paris/NewYork,” in conjunction with Basquiat’s solo exhibition there. Fraser introduced Damian to Basquiat who then explained each of his paintings in the show. He talked about how he had made them and what they signified. With this information in mind, Damian has created a life-size painting recreating Basquiat’s studio during the creation of Notary, Flash in Naples and many other artworks from that extraordinary period in Basquiat’s life.
